Emily Carr Institute is located on Granville Island, one of Vancouver's premier tourist destinations and home to the Public Market and many artisan's studios and shops. Here are some things you might like to check out while you're in Vancouver:
- Stanley Park is recognized as one of the greatest parks in the world. Covering 1,000 acres close to the downtown core, you can take in the scenery with a walk around the seawall.
- The VanDusen Botanical Garden is a 55 acre garden in the heart of Vancouver. The garden design features displays of plants in picturesque landscape settings amidst rolling lawns, tranquil lakes and dramatic rockwork with vistas of the mountains and Vancouver cityscape.
- Queen Elizabeth Park is a 130 acre park located at the highest point in the city. From the lookouts, you'll have a 360 degree view of the Vancouver skyline.
- The Vancouver Art Gallery is the largest art gallery in western Canada, and presents national and international exhibitions of works by a range of artists, from contemporary to historical masters.
- If you like to shop, you'll want to check out: South Granville, Robson Street, West 4 Ave, Yaletown and Main Street.
- Vancouver's Chinatown is the second largest Chinatown in North America. Visit the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden and join in a guided tour or wander the garden on your own.
- Staying at UBC? Visit the Nitobe Memorial Garden, one of the top five Japanese gardens outside of Japan. Depending on when you arrive, you may be able to participate in a Japanese tea ceremony. Also of interest is the Museum of Anthropology which is Canada's largest teaching museum and houses over 500,000 ethnographic and archaeological objects, many of which originate from the Northwest Coast of British Columbia.
- Get a great view of Vancouver from Grouse Mountain. Some people like to get to the top by doing the 2.6km hike straight up the face of the mountain but feel free to take the more scenic (and relaxing) Skyride.
- HSBC Celebration of Light is an annual fireworks festival held in English Bay. There will be fireworks displays on Sunday, July 28 and Wednesday, August 1.
